Founded in 1994, SportsBR is a non-profit organization that unites sports and community through several athletic events that positively impact the local economy and improve the quality of life within Baton Rouge. As a partnership driven organization, SportsBR works closely with Visit Baton Rouge and our local sports coordinators, facility owners, volunteers and local officials; by utilizing these existing assets and more, SportsBR is looking for a proven leader to maintain and grow our extensive sports event portfolio, grow our event production capability and continue our outreach in the community to improve quality of life in our city through sports activity.

Reports To: SportsBR Board of Directors


Operations and Leadership

  • Provide consistent, solid organizational leadership and oversight while maintaining organizational foundation of honesty, integrity and character;

  • Provide oversight to the development and execution of comprehensive organizational strategic plan that accomplishes organizational goals and objectives;

  • Represent organization as an active member of the Baton Rouge community;

  • Represent Baton Rouge for state, regional, and national conferences and bid efforts;

  • Recruit and help develop strong leaders to serve on SportsBR Board of Directors;

  • Responsible for leading all financial planning, budgeting, reporting and fiscal accountability;

  • Provide oversight and approval of all paperwork and reporting to the Louisiana State Treasurer’s Office, Visit Baton Rouge, and City-Parish of East Baton Rouge;

  • Familiarity with extended work schedules often involving nights and weekends, lifting of moderately heavy event equipment and regional driving

External Event Management and Sports Tourism

  • Provide oversight and planning support to local, state, regional, and national event development as they fit into the SportsBR Major Event Bid Plan;

  • Develop, maintain and continue to grow a strong business relationship with the staff of Visit Baton Rouge;

  • Negotiate and administer all contracts and cooperative endeavor agreements for events and outside services;

  • Serve as chairman for local organizing committees and, when necessary, lead efforts to host major sports events in the city;

  • Forecast and facilitate venue development through grassroots consensus-building;

  • Maintain and advance community alliances with tourism stakeholders;

  • Monitor industry trends and research;

  • Travel as necessary to solicit, observe and document major sports events and conventions;

Event Production

  • Oversee all aspects of the Battlefield Cross Country Festival, including sponsorship sales, registration solicitation, venue setup, and vendor relationships;

  • Work closely with FRESHJUNKIE Racing to produce Tiger 10k and Mardi Gras Mambo 10k/15k;

  • Develop and solicit sponsorship sales for Mardi Gras Mambo 10k/15k;

Programs and Initiatives

  • Oversee all aspects of SportsBR Community Outreach programs and initiatives, which include:

    • SportsBR Developmental Track & Field Series

      • 4 track meet series in spring, including three developmental meets and one middle school track meet

    • SportsBR Kids Club

    • Tennis Programming

  • Continue to build partnerships and develop relationships in the community to further the mission of SportsBR and expand participation in outreach programs and events;


  • Oversee SportsBR Annual Fund campaign in coordination with Annual Fund Committee;

  • Develop and execute all fundraising and campaign events;

  • Create and manage all campaign materials and information for annual fund solicitations;

  • Providing leadership in soliciting additional funds and maintaining all current sources of funding;

Marketing and Branding

  • Develop and execute marketing and brand development plan for SportsBR;

  • Set priorities Manage marketing budget;

  • Solicit media and marketing partners to provide inventory to promote and market SportsBR to various audiences in the local community;

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree preferred in Sports Marketing, Public Administration, Business Administration or PR/Communications;

  • 4-8 years of sports tourism or sport related experience at college, professional or recreational level required

  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal

  • Experience serving on a campaign; sports bid, political, employment search committee or other applicable experiences

  • Proven results selling services, concepts, memberships or products to customers

  • Experience with managing a nonprofit business model

  • Proven results as an entrepreneurial minded professional

Personal Characteristics

Good communication and public presentation skills, and proven ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and groups. Must be people-oriented, have high stamina/high energy levels, and be very “goal oriented”. Other characteristics important are proven problem analysis and resolution skills with exceptional analytical skills that work with a very diverse group of partners.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must have experience and skills in general office computer programs (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint). This position requires an ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects/responsibilities simultaneously while meeting stringent deadlines.

Physical requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently required to walk, bend, reach, use hands to handle, or feel, stand for extended periods of time (tradeshows/receptions) and sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds, have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and be required to speak clearly and hear well when communicating over the telephone and in person. The individual must be able to travel independently to domestic destinations via commercial airlines.
